$250,000 was raised for The James E. Marshall OCD Foundation at the ninth annual Beyond Beauty Dinner on February 12—an event that contributes to genetic research, education and grant funding for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder-related illnesses.
The event was given its name by Cosmetic World’s own publisher and editor emeritus, John Ledes, revealed the foundation’s founder from the podium, Linda Marshall, who is also president of Elysée Scientific Cosmetics.
This year’s dinner honored Nicolas Mirzayantz, group president of fragrances for International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF) and George Calvert, chief supply chain and R&D officer for Amway. Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski served as mistress of ceremonies, while the Grammy-winning music legend Dionne Warwick serenaded a captivated audience with an acoustic set to conclude the festivities.
This year’s event featured a silent auction, and half of the evening’s total proceeds were allotted to Clubhouse International—community centers around the globe for people living with mental illness, which augments their care with ongoing and flexible social support.
OCD is one of the most costly diseases for Americans, said Dr. Gerald Nestat, director of the OCD program at John Hopkins Medicine, amounting to a total of roughly $8 billion annually.
The disease is also highly stigmatized, noted beauty industry veteran Nicholas Ratut—not unlike cancer or AIDS, he said. Ratut shared his son’s brave battle against mental illness as resident in a Clubhouse in Paris, and Ratut himself serves on the organization’s board—which operates 340 centers that serve approximately 100,000 people worldwide.
In conclusion, Warwick summed up the palpable warmth and generosity of the evening succinctly: “Thank you from my heart to your heart for having the hearts that you have.”
