For two decades, HBA Global has remained one of the leading product development sources for the personal care, fragrance, skin care and cosmetic industries. This year, the HBA Global Expo & Conference is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an expanded offering of more than 60 educational sessions, over 200 speakers, and participants from countries across the globe.
Held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, the event took place from June 19-21 and featured over 650 exhibitors, as well as a Visionary Keynote Panel, moderated by W’s beauty director Jane Larkworthy, to discuss the future of beauty. Panelists included makeup artist/entrepreneur Sonia Kashuk; Jim Markham, founder and CEO of ColorProof Evolved Color Care; Deanna Kangas, president and CEO of Stila Cosmetics; and Catherine Walsh, senior vice president at Coty Prestige.
“Consumers now are willing to shop wherever they find value,” said Kashuk. “There is no longer a huge separation between mass and prestige, which is a huge game-changer.”
The panel agreed that another huge game-changer has been the post-recession social media surge.
“Facebook and Twitter have provided instant gratification, instant feedback and instant recommendations for many brands,” said Markham.
Kangas added that she thinks social media has greatly helped indie brands to get their real message out there.
“This is an opportunity for new brands to reach out and connect with their consumers,” said Kangas.
Walsh gave her perspective of the fragrance industry’s response to recent economic and social changes.
“The industry has responded post-recession with a huge amount of innovation,” said Walsh. “We’re seeing mature brands really trying to grow market share, as well as a return to flankers, which is driven by new, younger customers. As far as the celebrity fragrance category? It’s now 11 years old, and the consumer is still there.”
Also in the keynote ceremony, this year’s Positively Beautiful Award was presented to Linda Fairstein, author and attorney, on behalf of her exceptional work with Safe Horizon, a victim assistance agency that provides support, prevents violence, and promotes justice for victims of crime and abuse.
