Art of Packaging Marks 20 Years
On this—its 20th anniversary—the Art of Packaging Award Gala celebrated past honorees, but also looked to the future of design by conferring four $2,500 scholarships to graduate students enrolled in Marc Rosen’s fragrance and cosmetic packaging design program at Pratt University.
“Wow, what a night!” exclaimed Mr. Rosen from onstage at the University Club. “A citation from the Mayor and a chair at Pratt—do you think it's Chippendale?—all for doing something you love.”
He was referring to a congratulatory message from Mayor Michael Bloomberg—hand-delivered by Kate Levin, Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs—and the establishment of the Marc Rosen Chair for Distinguished Visiting Professorship In Design, endowed by the university in his honor.
Additionally, Leonard Lauder, chairman of The Estée Lauder Companies, sent a message of thanks to Mr. Rosen—read by Lynne Greene, president of Clinique worldwide. “You combine style with great function,” Mr. Lauder wrote, “and thanks to you, our products are not only instantly recognizable, but are safe and user-friendly.”
“We also greatly admire your work with Pratt,” Mr. Lauder continued, “and the fact that, with the aid of your scholarship fund, the Institute has shown to the world that package design is an important art form, while also introducing to the industry many a talented newcomer.”
Ms. Greene also commemorated the gala’s past honorees, including Avon, Bath & Body Works, Calvin Klein, Clinique, Coty Beauty, Dior Beauty, Estée Lauder, P&G Beauty/Prestige and Ralph Lauren Fragrances.
The event raised $250,000 this year for the Marc Rosen Scholarship for Graduate Package Design—tipping the total amount raised to just over $1.5 million, Mr. Rosen said. In addition to marking the event’s 20th anniversary, the evening also celebrated the 100th anniversary of Pratt University, which co-hosted the gala alongside the luxury goods packaging exhibition Luxe Pack.
“Luxe Pack is all about packaging innovation—and that’s what I see when I look at the work of Marc’s students displayed in the foyer tonight,” said Nathalie Grosdidier, executive director of Luxe Pack. She noted that the work of scholarship recipients—Daniella Burr, Libardo Molina, Christine Yoon Jung Woo and Jin Ryu—would be on display at the Luxe Pack New York show next month.
The gala also featured a video about the importance of fragrance and cosmetic packaging, with commentary from industry luminaries
Rochelle Bloom and
Linda Wells. Additionally, Mr. Rosen’s former student,
Jason Pivovitsch—who designed the event’s invitations—spoke about the challenging nature of Mr. Rosen’s program and the honor of working under him.
