Industry VIPs Convene In Boca

Approximately 400 industry leaders convened at the general session of the Personal Care Products Council’s (PCPC) 2010 annual meeting, with presentations by board chairman Dan Brestle, newly-instated president and CEO Lezlee Westine, professional service firm PricewaterhouseCoopers and pollster John Zogby.

Brestle focused on the Council’s successful legislative and regulatory efforts in 2009, key advances in consumer safety and its successful Look Good…Feel Better program.

“We continued to engage actively with industry associations and regulators and to advocate for the international harmonization of regulations that will help improve our business operations, reduce costs and market safe products worldwide,” Brestle said.

Marking her meeting debut, Westine noted the dramatic change in the political environment and how the Council has consequently stepped up industry visibility on Capitol Hill and in state capitals nationwide. “On the regulatory front, we are working closely with new FDA leadership, and our lobbying for increased federal funding has strengthened FDA’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors,” she said.

PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Susan McPartlin and John Stell presented findings from a study stating that the personal care products industry encourages employment diversity, generates significant trade surplus, contributes generously to a number of charities, fosters small businesses and increases R&D spending.

Based on federal government statistics, the study found that the cosmetics industry is directly responsible for creating nearly 2.8 million American jobs—with an unusually high allocation to women and minorities—and contributing $189 billion to America’s GDP. The industry is also significantly less energy-intensive compared to other manufacturers.

Next, Zogby spoke about the changing values and priorities of American consumers, and how this is impacting their cosmetics purchasing decisions.

Finally, the Council announced the reappointment and election of several key officers. Brestle will remain chairman, while KAO BrandsWilliam Gentner, Beiersdorf’s Iain Holding, Shiseido’s Heidi Manheimer and P&G’s Ed Shirley were named vice chairs. Elysée Scientific CosmeticsLinda Marshall was elected secretary and Elizabeth Arden’s Scott Beattie was named treasurer.
