Vera Wang Gets Ready to Rock

Vera Wang photo 1Vera Wang’s Princess fragrance is setting the stage for an encore performance. Again.

The designer is set to launch the second limited-edition flanker to Princess, entitled Vera Wang Rock Princess, in April. With edgier positioning and an eye-catching onyx bottle, the fragrance targets “a rebellious and daring downtown girl that’s all about music, fashion and spirit,” said Dennis Keogh, senior vice president of U.S. marketing for Coty Prestige, Vera Wang’s fragrance licensor.

Of Princess’ multiple flankers, Mr. Keogh said, “There are many facets to the lives of the Princess target consumer. She is constantly looking for new ways to express herself, and the flanker activity appeals to this spirit of self-expression.”

While the edgy, rock ‘n’ roll theme represents a new direction for Ms. Wang in her fragrance ventures, it is an attitude that has been present in her fashion for some time and translated naturally into the scent category, Mr. Keogh noted.Vera Wang photo 2

Developed by Givaudan’s Calice Becker, Rock Princess is termed a dark, fruity floral with top notes of white peach, red raspberry and bergamot; middle notes of heliotrope, rose, night-blooming jasmine, lily and spicy florals; and a base of cashmere woods, musk, iris and coconut.

The fragrance is available as an eau de toilette spray, priced at $72.00 for 3.4 oz., and a 5.0-oz. body lotion for $32.00. It arrives on counter exactly one year after the introduction of Vera Wang Flower Princess—the first Princess flanker—which launched in April 2008. Thus far, Ms. Wang has created nine total fragrances, including one men’s scent. Rock Princess will be sold at approximately 2,800 department stores nationwide, including Macy’s and Lord & Taylor.

The bottle—adapted from the original Princess packaging—is composed of smoky gray glass flecked with metal. A keepsake rhinestone-studded ring is set beneath the crown that serves as its cap. The outer carton is embossed with a graffiti-scrawled heart in silver and pink.
